Monastir
The port city of Monastir is located on the Gulf of Hammamet, the Mediterranean Sea.
The two islands that surround the ports are called 'Cap de Monastir'.
With a beautiful coastline, snow-white beaches, palm-lined promenades and a rich history, Monastir is an invitation to tourism.
History of Monastir
Monastir is built on the ruins of the Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman city of Ruspina. The rich history of Monastir is almost tangible here.
In the ninth century, the Arabs gave Ruspina the name Monastir, which means monastic city.
This is because of the ribat (fortified monastery castle) that was built in the eighth century to arm the trading city against attacks from the sea.

Ribat Monastir
By the sea you will find the ribat of Monastir.
An old monastery castle that has recently been restored and is also the oldest rabat ever built.
If you follow the long and narrow staircase to the top, a beautiful view of the city awaits.
Does this place look familiar? That could very well be. Monty Phyton's Life of Brian is included in this ribat.
Mosque Bourguiba
The Bourguiba Mosque, built in 1963, is designed according to a traditional architecture and dedicated to the first president of the Tunisian Republic:
Habib Bourguiba.
The mosque has two green domes, a golden dome and a 40 meter high minaret.
The prayer room can accommodate about 1,000 worshippers.
The mosque is free to visit and accessible to everyone.

Food in Monastir
If you are looking for a fish restaurant and also a hip place to sit, then you have come to the right place at Le Grotte. The brunch here is also recommended.
In the summer a great terrace and in the winter you can dine in private alcoves in the vaulted cellar (Le Grotte). A great atmosphere!
You will have no trouble finding a nice restaurant in Monastir. In the harbor you will also find a number of nice restaurants with a wonderful view.
