Hergla

Hergla is a clifftop coastal town on the Mediterranean Sea.

It is located in a bay called the Gulf of Hammamet.

Hergla is known for its beautiful coastline. White sandy beaches alternate with rocky beaches. The sea is sooo clear!

In addition, Hergla has a rich history and that is palpable.

History of Hergla

In Roman times, Hergla was called "Horrea Caelia". In the third century, Hergla was a border town between the historical regions of Byzacena (nowadays Sousse) and Zeugitana, with Carthage as its capital.

In the sixth century, the Byzantines built a fortress in Hergla. In the seventh century, the Arabs conquered Hergla and the people of Hergla were brutally murdered.

Remains from both the Roman and Byzantine periods are still found on the coast to this day.

Remnants from this time can also be seen on the coastline.

Center Hergla

Hergla is known for its white houses, often with blue windows and doors. The arched doors also show the typical Arabic character of this architectural style.

Unlike Hammamet, Sousse and El Kantaoui, Hergla has not yet been discovered by major tourism.

You can stroll through the small streets in the center and the inhabitants of Hergla are super friendly.

In addition, the inhabitants of Hergla are proud of their town. Hergla is therefore one of the cleanest places in Tunisia.

Food & Drinks in Hergla

Hergla has a small fishing port.

Good news for fish lovers.

Be surprised and try a brunch (petit-dejeuner). Really recommended. It is best to go to Le Compte and Esplanada Belle Vue for this.

The restaurant next to the mosque is also such a gem. Through a typical Tunisian courtyard you can go to the upstairs terrace with a beautiful view of the sea.

Here you can enjoy traditional Tunisian food. The owners are so friendly!

Shops in  Hergla

Hergla is known for its half shops. Around the mosque in the center you will find a number of these kinds of shops next to each other.

Halfa is a variant of esparto grass that grows mainly in North West Africa.

In Hergla they make beautiful baskets, but also other home accessories.

In a street behind the mosque you will also find the artisan shop El Fenne.

This shop is run by three Scandinavian women and their collection is constantly changing.

You can find many special items that are handmade in Tunisia.
